Survey says: Australia marina industry employs 15,900 (8 March 2012)

New reports on marina infrastructure called “the most comprehensive marina study ever conducted”
Two new reports issued by the Marina Industry Association of Australia (MIAA) said that the marina industry employs about 15,900 workers across the country. The reports were carried out by the trade association and the Recreational Marine Research Centre (RMRC) at Michigan State University. The RMRC has worked with NMMA on its research on the US marine industry.
“This is the most comprehensive marina study ever conducted anywhere,” says Dr Ed Mahoney, RMRC director, in a statement. “It provides a tremendous insight into the operation, performance and economic contribution of Australian marinas.”
The reports, building on the findings of the 2008/09 Australian Marina Value Pilot Study, are based on a large sample size of 31 per cent of Australia’s 356 marinas. The first report focuses on marina financial performance and trends. The second, and more extensive report, includes social, environmental and economic matters.
The reports estimated that “direct permanent and casual employment” generated by marinas in Australia was 15,900 (excluding contractors). (www.ibiplus.com, 7 March 2012)
