Design guru Philippe Starck and Ocibar CEO Antonio Zaforteza held a press conference last week during the official opening of Port Adriano’s new extension in Mallorca, Spain.
Attended by more than 75 international media delegates, the presentation discussed the French designer’s first marina project from concept to implementation.
«I absolutely hate cars» was Starck’s introduction to elaborate on the revolutionary underground parking lot situated underneath the multi-storey marina clubhouse — an approach that minimises traffic around the harbour area and limits car presence near the boats.
He has reinvented bollards to resemble cleats, concealed cables and pipes coming from the moored boats, applied his emblematic lamp design to pontoon lights and used wooden deck floors for the clubhouse facilities, with the intention to extend the boater’s experience once they’ve left the boat.
The extension of Port Adriano, a project that has taken 10 years from inception, represents an investment of €90m. Financial stakeholders include an investment fund owned by local group Banca March and three private investors including Zaforteza himself.
With the addition of 82 berths from 20m-80m (66ft-262ft) and the possibility to offer even larger berth spaces during summer, Port Adriano offers an alternative to the most popular, often fully booked marinas around the Balearics.
The expansion also triplicates the working area of the refit yard to a total of 10,000m2 and, with its new 250t travel lift, the yard becomes the second option on the island for vessels up to 40m (131ft) in length.
The new marina facilities have been designed to combine international shops and restaurants with premium marine businesses. Other marine businesses established at Port Adriano include Yacht Moments, Lamprell Marine, Sunseeker Germany and Princess.
